You may be asked to create a login to manage refills and shipping preferences. This is simple and no different from Chewy etc.
Option 3: Purina Pro Plan Vet Direct
If your pet is on a prescription diet, Vet Direct is a convenient way to have food delivered to your home.
- Home delivery and recurring shipments
- Helps ensure the correct therapeutic diet
- Streamlined authorization through our clinic
- Same pricing, discounts and coupons as Chewy or Amazon
- Purina Pro Plan non-prescription diets also available
You will be asked to create an account and link to Charleston Harbor Vets to purchase prescription diets from Purina if you have not already done so.
Option 4: Chewy
Chewy offers an online portal that allows our team to review and approve prescriptions more efficiently than most retailers.
- Prescriptions still require medical record review and doctor authorization
- Requests are generally able to be handled more quickly than phone/fax pharmacies
Option 5: Other Online Retailers
Examples include Amazon, Costco (Online Only), 1-800-PetMeds, and other retailers utilizing online portals for processing. We can support these options, but they are typically less streamlined for veterinary workflow and may take longer depending on the request.
- All requests still require record review and doctor authorization
- Turnaround time may vary depending on request volume and details
Option 6: Retail Pharmacies That Require Call-In
Some pharmacies do not offer an online prescription request portal for veterinary prescriptions and require our teammates to call in the prescription. This is the most time-intensive option for our medical team.
Examples: CVS, Walgreens, local grocery store pharmacies, and in-person Costco pharmacy. Any pharmacy that we must call/fax prescriptions into.
All applicable fees must be paid before called-in prescriptions are processed. If you keep a card on file with us, it will expedite this process. Written prescription pickup is always free.
FAQ
Do you have to approve every prescription request?
Yes. For safety and accuracy, all prescription requests are legally required to have a medical record review and doctor authorization.
Can I fill my pet’s prescription at any pharmacy?
Yes, as long as your pet meets medical requirements for the prescription and we have a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship which is established by being seen by our vet within the past 12 months.
Can you call in a prescription same day?
Often but we cannot guarantee this. Our doctors are busy with patients throughout the day and call-in pharmacies may take longer due to manual processing and pharmacy hold times or errors.
What if my pet hasn’t been seen recently?
We may need an exam or updated testing before refilling certain medications to ensure safe and appropriate care. We must have seen your pet here at the clinic within the past 12 months to legally prescribe medication. This is not our rule, but a DEA requirement we must adhere to.
Can you just email my written prescription to me or the pharmacy?
Unfortunately, all written prescriptions must be picked up in person and hand delivered to the pharmacy per DEA requirements. Email or text is not a safe or accepted method for prescription processing.
